The utopian vision of the original colonists has long since been frustrated as a result of the harsh, brutal realities of the untamed alien environment. While cut off from the home planet the small colony cannot maintain their developed, hi-tech standard of living and thus its people are forced to revert to a semi-primitive state of existence.Following two near catastrophic wars and years of brutal repression at the hands of a megalomaniac Dictator, the surviving settlers and their descendants are under no illusions as to the struggle they face just to survive. The place is Agricultural Commune 217, also named ‘Jericho’ by its inhabitants. 217 is little more than a bleak and sterile collective farm located right on the very edge of the Veritas Colony. Beyond its borders there is only the native indigenous landscape- untouched and unspoiled by human terra-forming but still home to so many native creatures... some benign and others hostile. ‘Jericho’ is not much but to its one dozen residents- a mix of exiles, refugees and dissidents, this place is home.Reverend John Carmody was a passenger on the first colony ship SS Artemis, so many years ago. Now he is an old man seemingly forced to live out his days on Commune 217, disillusioned and haunted by a lifetime of regrets. His wife is a deeply damaged individual- bitter, vindictive and finding solace only in her twisted ideology of religious extremism. Tse Chi Cheung is the Administrator of the Commune, an ineffectual bureaucrat determined to prove his loyalty to the ‘Great Leader’ of the Veritas Colony, Cheung has a secret which threatens his position within the governing Party. Meanwhile the Ali family have fled to ‘Jericho’ following a brutal sectarian war in their hometown. Mustafa Ali tries to control his family through intimidation and violence but his eldest daughter Aimal seems determined to defy her father’s authority. This small but diverse group of settlers must attempt to put their old differences behind them as they struggle to survive day by day, while the totalitarian government continues to oppress and terrorise the frontier communities. Life for the inhabitants of ‘Jericho’ is always tough ... but it is about to get much worse. The attack is a bolt from the blue, the enemy- an indigenous species previously thought to be on the brink of extinction. With no help forthcoming the settlers have no choice but to pull together and defend their homes from the ‘xenome’ attackers. At the point when all seems lost an enigmatic drifter arrives at the commune gates, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle and carrying a hold all bag full of ‘xenome’ scalps. The man gives no name other than his claimed rank of ‘Captain’ and his past is shrouded in secrecy. This battle scarred soldier of fortune says he is here to help but Reverend Carmody is sceptical. When the crisis escalates the moralist Carmody and the nihilistic ‘Captain’ are thrown together by circumstance and are forced to co-operate in a desperate vendetta against the alien legions. As the battle rages towards a terrifying conclusion the settlers’ personal grievances will reach breaking point. Their choice should be clear- they must either stand united and live or turn on each other and die. Of course, reality is never quite so simple...
